Warfcellar in Utrecht

Living in a monumental warfcellar

This wharf cellar was completely empty except for one bulb on the ceiling. A living space had to be made on a small budged, making an effort to eliminate the negative influences of a cellar as much as possible. It had to feel spacious, light and dry but not lose the character of the wharfs.

Living underground also has advantages. It feels safe; it is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. You don't disturb anyone and it gives a primal feeling. It is reminiscent of a rock house.

Because living here is so different it is also easier to make different choices; in what a kitchen should look like for example. It has become a city apartment with comfort that you can’t see.
